Introducing a new series: Risk Faces. For our first feature, we took a ride with California native Lewis Carter in his 1992 Mustang in the streets of Brooklyn to learn about his quest in modeling, growing up in Los Angeles, and what's to come for the fresh and personable model.
How is life in LA different from life in NY, and which do you prefer?
Honestly, they're completely opposite. I never really was around or got to see the good side of my city. I feel that people, from the outside looking in, don't understand how LA really is for me or for someone in my same position. Being born and bred in the heart of South Central Los Angeles wasn't easy, but I was lucky I had very disciplined parents. They consistently kept me involved in sports and different types of programs, as a lot of my friends and family members are dead or in jail. I made up my mind at a very young age that I didn't want to end up that way, and when I got the chance I would go as far away from home as possible. LA is home and there is no place like home. I do love my city, but at this stage in my life, I prefer New York. Why NY and why not LA? It's fast-moving, keeps me on my feet, and the possibilities are endless.
How did you get into modeling?
That's a really long story which I would rather not talk about. Just know I'm here and I'm not going anywhere.
What do you like and not like about the fashion industry?
“As a model you used to have to work to become famous. Now you have to be famous to get work.”
- Abbey Lee Kershaw
I love fashion. I can be myself. I love clothes. I love expressing myself through my personal fashion. Working with and meeting new and top designers, photographers, stylists, creative directors and artists is always very intriguing. Everyone is so different in their own way, yet we all connect and make something great. I love that feeling of greatness. You can't buy that.
What's your motto?
Take Risks in life. Never be afraid to live life on the edge. Have fun and stay true to yourself.
What does your day look like?
You ever see "I am legend"? I feel like Will Smith every day. I live in my own world.
